Botox® (derived from Clostridium botulinum bacterium ) is an FDA approved medicine which should only be used by fully qualified and experienced medical practitioners. Botox® has been used successfully for many years to treat eye muscle spasms, cerebral palsy, chronic migraine and hyperhidrosis(excess underarm sweating). Botox® is a muscle relaxant (not a filler!) that temporarily immobilises muscles. It works by partially blocking the nerve impulses to any muscles that have been injected. Today, it is a very popular cosmetic /anti-wrinkle treatment used to successfully treat lines and wrinkles on the face and neck.
As a rejuvenation technique, small quantities of Botox® are injected into specific muscles causing them to relax. As these muscles are no longer able to flex there is a smoothing of the overlying skin as lines are no longer being created or reinforced. Most popular facial areas treated are the frown line, the forehead, crows’ feet, lipstick lines,chin/ jaw line and the neck.
The procedure takes around 15 minutes and is administered by one of our very experienced in-house Doctors who have 15 years experience of advanced aesthetic treatments. After 5 – 10 days the muscles injected will be temporarily immobilised (asleep if you like). The effect lasts for approximately 4 months in the first instance. The procedure will need to be repeated every 4 months or so during the first year to maintain a ‘calm’ upper face. After the first year, subsequent treatments may be required once every 5- 6 months. If you don’t repeat the treatment, your facial expressions and lines simply return.
Like all medicines Botox® can cause side effects and these will occur within the first few days following injection. The majority of patients experience no side-effects whatsoever. Side effects can include headaches and/or flu-like symptoms which disappear within a few days. As with all injections, small bruises may appear at the injection site but make up may be applied to the area after 6 hours. Very rarely heaviness of the eyelids may occur but this is a reversible condition as Botox® is a temporary muscle relaxant. If you have any concerns, please ring the Clinic.
Results and the duration of the effects of the treatment may vary depending on patients age and life style.
